REIMAGINING CULLY 5 CORNERS

Community-Led Design Process

Our team, made up of neighbors and representatives from various community organizations has conducted four collaborative design sessions in 2023 to discuss and generate creative ideas for making Cully 5 Corners a welcoming and engaging place.

  • April 1st + April 4th, 2023- Walk n’ Talk Discussions

    • The events were held with the community to gather ideas and themes to explore as we begin the design process of the Cully 5 Corners Intersection.

    • These sessions started as a tour of the intersection, to see and experience the intersection as a pedestrian. Then we discussed our observations and shared what we saw as opportunities for creating a more welcoming intersection.

    • Themes Discussed included:

      • Diversity as a mosaic of life

      • Confluence of rivers, of cultures, of streets (in this intersection!)

      • United as Cully

      • Inclusive, fun, colorful

  • June 11, 2023 - Community Visoning Workshop

    • was led by visionary architect Mark Lakeman of the City Repair Project, as part of the 2023 Village Building Convergence.

    • In this 3-hour workshop, we worked in small groups to brainstorm and create mockups that will inspire a design for the intersection that could include art, benches, kiosks, and other elements intended to engage the Cully community and enliven this public space.

    • The resulting concepts help us reimagine how the 5 Corners could look different, feel different, and operate differently to draw the whole intersection together, as we fully engage the residents and friends of Cully.

    • Check out the workshop summary to learn more about it!

  • Dec 4, 2023 - Action Team Meetings

    • To wrap up the year, we revisited updates on our progress and identified our low-hanging fruit in terms of creating visual progress in the 5 Corners intersection.

    • With interest and enthusiasm specifically coming from conversations with the Grace Presbyterian Church, we discussed how we might explore the use of the corner as a public plaza.

Design Elements Discussed

Designs will primarily be aesthetic with less impact on traffic flow or structural elements of the intersection. Design elements under consideration include:

  • Seating or benches

  • Landscaping with Native Pollinator Plants

  • Sidewalk design and painting

  • “Welcome to Cully” Signage

  • Cully Neighborhood Informational Panels

Key Themes that have been identified during three initial community engagement workshops include:

  • Celebration of diversity, violence reduction, and youth engagement

  • Confluence (of local rivers, as well as streets in the intersection, and cultures in the neighborhood)

  • The Heart of Cully- the main artery and key connection point in the neighborhood
